Home care wait times in Tasmania
Last updated 21 August 2026 · Reviewed when new wait-time data is released
The short version
- Tasmanians are taking around 302 days from application to services starting - above the national median of 294 days, and among the longest in the country if the figure holds.
- The queue is national: your priority category and approval date decide your place, not living in Tasmania. Medium and standard priority approvals typically wait 8-11 months for funding.
- Nationally, 106,977 people were waiting at 30 June 2026.
- Tasmania is really three small markets - South, North and North-West - with thin coverage in between. CHSP interim services can start while you wait.
How long are Tasmanians waiting?
Figures current as at 21 August 2026. The state median is from the Aged Care Act 2024 Wait Times Report (covering 1 November 2025 - 31 March 2026); the national queue figure is My Aged Care data to 30 June 2026.
The government’s first Wait Times Report put Tasmania’s median at around 302 days from application to services commencing - above the national median of 294, and second only to Queensland’s 322 if the figure is accurate. We say “around” deliberately: unlike Victoria (273, the shortest) and Queensland, the Tasmanian number hasn’t been independently confirmed, and in a small market medians move around. The measure covers the whole journey - registration, assessment, the queue, then signing with a provider and starting services.
Tasmania is one of the smallest markets, with 8,088 people receiving Support at Home at 31 March 2026, and it works less like one market than three: the South around Hobart, the North around Launceston, and the North-West around Burnie and Devonport each function as a semi-separate provider landscape - some providers literally structure their Tasmanian services into those three regions. Outside them, the west coast, Central Highlands and east coast have few providers, and the Bass Strait islands rely on single local operators.
One national queue - Tasmania doesn’t have its own waitlist
Approval for Support at Home places you in the National Priority System, one queue for the whole country. Your position depends on your priority category - urgent waits about a month, high 1.5-3 months, medium and standard 8-11 months - and your approval date within it. Living in Hobart, Launceston or Queenstown changes neither; what varies locally is how quickly assessments happen and how quickly services can start once funded. Our national waitlist guide explains the full mechanism.
What you can do while you wait in Tasmania
- Ask about CHSP interim services. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme covers entry-level help - cleaning, meals, transport - while you wait, and it’s continuing as its own program until at least 30 June 2029. Ask My Aged Care (1800 200 422) for a CHSP referral. See how CHSP works and CHSP in Tasmania.
- Request a priority review if circumstances change. A hospital stay, a fall, a new diagnosis or a carer who can no longer manage can justify a higher priority category. A GP letter or discharge summary strengthens the request.
- Understand your region’s market. Choice is real in the three population centres and thin everywhere else, and travel charges are significant across dispersed small towns while providers set their own prices. Our guide to regional Tasmanian providers covers who operates where.
- Know who’s in your corner. Advocacy Tasmania is the state’s free, independent aged care advocacy body, reachable through OPAN on 1800 700 600. Tasmania’s Department of Health also runs state-funded community care for under-65s alongside Commonwealth aged care.

Finding a provider in Tasmania
You’ll have 56 days to sign a service agreement once your budget is released. In a small market that shortlist work is quicker than on the mainland - but capacity matters more, so it’s worth asking providers about availability, not just prices. See providers in Tasmania.
Common questions
Does applying from Tasmania change my place in the queue?
No. The queue is national - priority category and approval date decide your place, wherever you live. Tasmania’s longer median reflects the whole local journey, including assessment time and service start-up, not a separate Tasmanian queue.
Is the wait different between Hobart, Launceston and the North-West?
No region-by-region wait figures have been published - only the statewide median of around 302 days. What we do know is that each region has its own provider landscape, so how quickly services start once you’re funded can differ. Comparing providers in your region early is the practical response.
Can I get help before my funding arrives?
Yes. CHSP interim services can often start within weeks, priority reviews exist for changed circumstances, and short-term pathways such as restorative care bypass the queue for those who qualify. Start with CHSP in Tasmania.
